The Digidentity Wallet app is your two-factor authentication (2FA) method. It securely stores your Digidentity products and is used to confirm your identity when you log in or use those products.
For many Digidentity services, strong authentication is required under security and legal standards. The Wallet app fulfils this requirement.
What does the Wallet app do?
The Wallet app:
- Acts as your two-factor authentication (2FA)
- Securely stores your Digidentity products
- Is required when using products such as eHerkenning or digital signing
Each time you log in or use a Digidentity product, you must confirm the action in the Wallet app using your 5-digit PIN.
Why is the Wallet app required?
Many Digidentity products require strong authentication. This means your identity must be verified using two factors:
- Something you know – your password or PIN
- Something you have – your registered device with the Wallet app
SMS verification alone is not sufficient for certain security levels and government requirements.
The Wallet app helps ensure:
- Higher security
- Compliance with legal and regulatory standards
- Protection against identity fraud
I only log in occasionally. Do I still need the app?
Yes.
Even if you only use a Digidentity product once per year, the required authentication level remains the same. The Wallet app is required each time you log in or use your product.
Can I log in using SMS only?
In most cases, no.
For products that require strong authentication (such as eHerkenning level 3 or higher), the Wallet app is mandatory. If SMS login is available for your product, this will be shown during the login process.
What is the difference between my PIN and my password?
- Password – Used as a backup login method on the My Digidentity website.
- 5-digit PIN – Used in the Wallet app to approve logins and use your Digidentity products.
If you normally log in using the Wallet app, you may not need to use your password. However, you should always store your password securely as it may be required for account recovery.
What happens if I remove the Wallet app?
The Digidentity Wallet app works a similar way to an authenticator app (such as Google or Microsoft Authenticator). It is linked to your identity and securely stores your Digidentity products on your device.
If you delete the Wallet app from your device, you remove your authentication method. This means:
- You will no longer be able to use your Digidentity products
To use them again, you will need to reinstall the app and complete the account recovery process. The account recovery process requires you to verify your identity again for security reasons.
