The Digidentity Wallet App only accepts ICAO-compliant identity documents. If your document does not meet these international standards, or lacks certain required features, it is most likely not supported.
What is an ICAO-compliant identity document?
To be accepted, a document must comply with the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) — specifically ICAO Doc 9303. These standards require:
- A Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) – a section with encoded personal data.
- A contactless NFC chip (eMRTD) – storing identity data securely.
- A clearly defined expiration date.
- Issuance by an official government authority.
Documents typically accepted include passports, national ID cards, and some residence permits.
Common reasons your document may not be accepted:
- The document does not have an MRZ.
- The document lacks a contactless NFC chip.
- The document was not issued under ICAO Doc 9303 standards.
- The document is a driver’s license or a non-biometric card.
⚠️ Exception: We do accept Dutch driving licences, as they contain an NFC chip and meet the required technical standards.
Other driving licences are not accepted, as they often lack an MRZ or chip.
- The document does not have an expiration date.
⚠️ Note: Some countries issue ID cards without an expiration date. Unfortunately, these cannot be accepted, as the verification process requires a valid expiration date to meet security and compliance requirements.
- In rare cases, an identity document cannot be verified using NFC. When this happens, we block NFC verification and show a message stating that the document is not eligible for NFC.
⚠️ We use the digital information stored in the NFC chip to verify the authenticity of your identity document. In very rare situations, the digital signature on the chip cannot be validated. This means the system cannot confirm that the data was issued by an official authority. For security reasons, NFC verification cannot continue when this validation fails.
If available, you can still complete your verification by choosing one of the alternative methods shown in the app. If no alternative method is offered, please use a different identity document.
