For the General Medical Council (GMC) identity verification process, we can only accept a full UK driving licence.
Unfortunately, provisional UK driving licences and driving licences issued outside the UK cannot be used for this verification process.
If you have selected one of these document types, you will need to provide an alternative accepted identity document to continue your registration.
Which identity documents can I use instead?
You can use one of the following alternatives:
- A valid passport (UK or non-UK).
- An accepted National Identity Card issued by one of the countries listed below.
If you have one of these documents, return to the registration process and select the appropriate document type to continue your identity verification.
Which countries' National Identity Cards are accepted?
For the GMC identity verification process, National Identity Cards issued by the following countries are currently accepted:
- Albania
- Argentina
- Austria
- Belarus
- Belgium
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Bulgaria
- Croatia
- Cyprus
- Czech Republic
- Estonia
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Greece
- Hungary
- Ireland
- Italy
- Latvia
- Liechtenstein
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
- Malta
- Mexico
- Netherlands
- Poland
- Romania
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
- Spain

Important: If your country is not listed above, you cannot use a National Identity Card issued by that country for the GMC identity check. You will need to use a valid passport instead.
Don't have an alternative identity document?
Unfortunately, if you do not have a valid passport, a full UK driving licence, or an accepted National Identity Card, you will not be able to complete the GMC identity verification process through Digidentity.
